My wife knew her grandfather. I never did. By the time we were together, he was gone — and with him, everything she couldn't quite put into words about who he was. The stories, the voice, the way he carried himself. I've spent years hearing about him secondhand.
That's a particular kind of loss. Not grief, exactly. More like a door that was always closed. You know someone mattered deeply to the person you love, and you'll never get to know why firsthand. You'll never hear it from him.
